irb summary (4)

The attorney and the narrator finally get rid of Lucy by paying a cab driver to take her to another hotel. She eventually calls them at the Flamingo but Dr. Gonzo makes up a story to get her off their backs and leave them alone. Right while Dr. Gonzo does this the narrator takes pure Adrenaline. This is the craziest drug any of them have done. They compare it to mescaline and say mescaline is nothing in comparison to this adrenaline. The narrator takes the drug and from then on the novel describes the crazy things he is seeing. Not only does the room change around him but so do the people he encounters. Peoples' appearances completely change proving that this drug can completely change someone's state of mind. Eventually the narrator wakes up with a completely ruined hotel room. He walks around with a tape recorder of what he heard while he was tripping on the many dangerous drugs that he used over the time period. While listening and recollecting the narrator goes through many flash backs and begins to remember his crazy drug experience. It is a miracle that the two were not arrested because they went all around Vegas drugged out of their mind, messing with different people such as Dr. Gonzo screaming at the couples in the car on the Las Vegas strip.

Those that love to read about people's adventures during the 60's and 70's will love Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. This is a story of a journalist who travels to Vegas to cover a race called "The Mint 400". The only problem is he is a doctor of journalism and an event like this has to be covered is all of the correct preportions. To do this he and his attorny get numerous amounts of drugs and alcohol. They arrive at Vegas just in time to cover the story, but that is the last thing that they want to do. The real purpose of their journey is to find the American Dream. They found it alright but when they saw what it really was they said forget it. They go around breaking all kinds of laws and create all sorts of rukkus. It was all in good fun though and nobody really got hurt. Through out this journey they learn many things including never to give a 16 year old girl that you don't know acid. This book was also made into a movie which I plan to watch very soon. I have heard that it is fantastic.

IRB quote (4)

“They work in pairs,” said my attorney. “Sometimes in gangs. They’ll climb right into your bedroom and sit on your chest, with bowie knives.”(145)

I thought this was a very interesting conversation in the story. It was with the attorney, who is high on several drugs, talking to an oblivious police officer who has no idea that the man he is talking to is a crazy dangerous drug addict. It is instances like this that keeps the story on edge. These two men who are involved with so many drugs are at a police drug conference in Las Vegas. Taking risks is a huge theme in this novel and this is truly shown within this scene.

irb video (3)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c9Kx_t6ko1k

This is the scene where they arrive at the hotel. They are tripping on acid when they arrive. Raoul actually becomes scared when all of the people turn into reptiles. I think the movie did a good job of portraying this scene from the book.

irb quote (3)

"She was not right for us-not in this fragile situation" (Page 115)

This is a great quote to describe how the narrator and now the attorney feel about Lucy. The attorney definitely made a mistake for picking her up because they believe that now they can get caught for drugs and kidnap. They were already doing highly dangerous drugs at a police convention. It was risky enough as it was and now they have to worry about this young girl and if she will complicate their situation even further.

IRB summary- (3)

This section of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was extremely exciting but in a much different way than usual. Earlier in the book the characters were just parading around Las Vegas on all different types of drugs. It was exciting to see the different ways they would react to these drugs. The narrator and attorney are reunited and back at it in Las Vegas. They are still doing drugs but the descriptions of their trips aren't as vivid as before. Now the main context of the story is about how they feel about different things. For instance the character Lucy is introduced in this section. She was a nice church girl that happened to get picked up by the attorney and now she is tripping on acid and a complete mess. The characters eventually try to ditch her because they believe she will get them caught by the law.

irb quote (2)

" I know, Im guilty. I understand that. I knew it was a crime, but I did it anyway." " Thats a strange attitude" he said.

I thought that this was a very interesting point in the story. This was when the narrator had been driving on his own ever since his attorney left. He was on the run without paying his hotel bill. He had a car full of drugs and was drunk and gets pulled over by a cop. I thought this was strange because right before he was pulled over he had extreme paranoia, but after he gets pulled over he seems to just not care, as the cop pulls up he just stand there leaning against the car with a beer. I don't know whether it was just the narrator just giving up and accepting jail or what hi thought process was. However in this situation, it seems to work because the cop gives him a break and lets him go.

This video is just like the book describes it. I feel that the movie did a great job because it is extremely similiar to the book. When they do ether the book describes how they couldn't walk or control themselves. If ether is really like this in real life then it is a crazy drug that only crazy people would do. It is very wild that any one would ever do such a thing, but at the same time I think is is extremely interesting that a substance could do this to peoples' brains and make them behave in such a way.

Irb 1-summary (2)

I have finished part one of the book. A lot of crazy things happened to the characters while they were in Las Vegas. They do many different types of drugs such as cocaine, mescaline, ether, etc. The craziest drug scene thus far in the novel was the ether trip. They end up going to a circus and uff ether before walking in. They could hardly walk because ether does not allow the brain to connect with the rest of the body. They did a great job in the movie to show what it would be like to walk around while tripping on ether. Once they go in the circus it is really crazy to read about what they experience and how they behave. I can't even imagine what they were thinking. After the circus they go back to their hotel room. The attorney takes a lot of acid and sits in the bath tub. He threatens to kill the narrator so the narrator locks him in the bath room to let him wear off his trip. When the narrator wakes up the bathroom is open and the attorney is gone. The narrator gets really paranoid so takes the car and drives out of Vegas eventually meeting the cop. Then he calls the attorney and the attorney tells him to go back to Vegas so he begins his route back to Vegas

Irb post (1)

Las Vegas is the main setting of this novel. The Mint Hotel is the first hotel that the characters stay in. Vegas is a very fitting setting for this novel. Life in Vegas is crazy, which makes the characters experiences with drugs even crazier. It is hard to imagine the setting of this novel being anywhere else. Raoul is becoming accustomed to the city of Las Vegas but finds it very harsh. Also, it is interesting to me that Vegas is a lot of dessert. The setting goes from practically nothingness to all of the spontaneity of downtown Las Vegas. I am excited to read on and see how the city treats the main characters.

IRB post-trailer (1)

This is a Trailer to the Movie Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Johnny Depp stars as Raoul Duke in the movie. From watching the trailer, I can't really tell what is going to happen in the remainder of the novel. In the trailer, the main characters ride through the dessert, picked up a hitch hiker, and then seemingly broke a lot of laws and experimented with a lot of drugs. Online, I found that the movie follows the book very closely. However, I am committed to reading the book because I heard it was a great novel. The characters actually looked somewhat like what I pictured them as after having read the beginning of the book. I will likely watch the movie after I finish the book as it got a 7.6/10 on imdb.com.

IRB post- summary (1)

Fear and Lothing in Las Vegas has already captivated my interest. It is a storty of two men, the narrator and his attorney. They possess very unique personalities that really entice the reader. Despite their freidnship, they seem to fight often. In one instance, they pointed pistols at each other. The books opens with the two men speeding in the dessert on the way to Las Vegas. The men has a suitcase that is full of drugs such as Acid, Ether, Cocaine, Mescaline, and other drugs. The two characters have made fools of themselves in public several times, likely because they were tripping on drugs. The book is very descriptive about the characters trips and they go into detail about how they feel and it reveals their inner thoughts. I am really excited to continue reading this book, and i plan to watch the movie after I finish the book.

180 South

"When you live your life outdoors, you get a sense that you have a responsibility to protect these wild places."

1) This quote makes lot of sense because naturally wants to protect their habitat/living grounds. It is the instinctual nature of animals (humans are animals as well). Ivan and Doug purchased the huge plot of land because they wanted to protect the place in which they have been living and studying. They want to protect the beauty/nature from the destruction and industrialization that humanity inevitably brings with it.

2) If I am fortunate enough to own a very large property when I got older, I will protect it and maintenance is allowing plants and wildlife to grow freely. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to own a large plot of land.

I want to become...

I want to become a person that others can look up to. I want to be able to step into any social scene and be able to interact smoothly with all types of people. Eventually, I want to become unbiased, which is seemingly impossible to do. I want to have a positive impact in my community, helping to better the place we live.

Jay Gatsby- I want to become the wealthiest man in all of East Egg. I want to be known as a stylish man that lives a lavish lifestyle. I want to spend the rest of my life with Daisy.

The Narrator- I want to become an independent man who stands up for what he believes in. I want to speak out against issues that seem immoral and uncivil.

Gatsby seems more self centered. He wants to impress others with somewhat of a fake identity. He is trying to win the heart of the girl he loves. The Narrator wants to better himself, and the community around him.

P. Diddy sails on $850,000-a-week superyacht controlled by iPad

source: http://www.cnn.com/2011/TECH/mobile/01/06/ipad.superyacht.diddy/index.html

3 Facts:
1) Custom-made software from German luxury yacht firm Lurssen gives passengers control of everything but the captain's steering wheel, all with the most leisurely brush of their iPad.
2) The Yacht costs roughly $850,000.
3) The yacht has ultra-lux furnishings, many Jacuzzis and plenty of flat-screen LCD panels.

2 Questions:
1) Will Apple one day take over the world?
2) Eventually, Will you be able to control the steering wheel of the ship with the Ipad?

1 Opinion:
In my opinion, this is the coolest thing I have ever seen. Technology is amazing. However, perhaps this money could have been better spent (Charities). However, when you are a billionaire, i suppose it doesn't really matter.

A Decades-Long Study Is Finally Published

source: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/31/arts/design/31antiques.html?partner=rss&emc=rss

3 Facts:
1) An architectural monograph, in progress since the 1950s, was finally published a few weeks ago.
2) Richard Nickel died at 43, he was killed by falling debris at a demolition site he was exploring.
3) The recently published study focuses on early skyscrapers created by Louis Sullivan.

2 Questions:
1) Why did this study take so long to publish?
2) Are Nickel's early findings still relevant today?

1 Opinion:
I think that architecture is a very under appreciated form of art. It is not necessarily in museums, however it can be seen everywhere (cities etc). It is incredibly useful.

Walsh: 'I'm Going To Sign' Chandler To Long-Term Deal

source: http://www.nypost.com/p/sports/knicks/donnie_wilson_fan_PQcGtNh4lCpbTVfAIEIQ9J

3 Facts:
1) Wilson Chandler recently has his best game of the season against the Spurs, going for a season-high 31 points.
2) It was announced in late October that the league will be going through a salary cap shrinkage in the off-season.
3) Chandler is averaging 17.9 points per game.

2 Questions:
1) Why is the salary cap shrinking next season?
2) Why do NBA players get paid so highly in comparison to other professional sports?

1 Opinion:
1) I think that the Knicks should try to hang on to Wilson Chandler and build around him and Amare Stodoumire.
http://thelakersnation.com/forums/index.php?/topic/44954-donnie-walsh-knicks-will-re-sign-wilson-chandler-after-season/ -- This blogger also agrees that the Knicks should make a priority to resign Wilson Chandler in the off-season.
