"When you live your life outdoors, you get a sense that you have a responsibility to protect these wild places."
1) This quote makes lot of sense because naturally wants to protect their habitat/living grounds. It is the instinctual nature of animals (humans are animals as well). Ivan and Doug purchased the huge plot of land because they wanted to protect the place in which they have been living and studying. They want to protect the beauty/nature from the destruction and industrialization that humanity inevitably brings with it.
2) If I am fortunate enough to own a very large property when I got older, I will protect it and maintenance is allowing plants and wildlife to grow freely. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to own a large plot of land.

I agree with you Soffer. When living with more outdoors in your life, there seems to be a larger responsibility for protecting it. I'd like to see you create a large wildlife habitat in 30 years when you own a few doxen acres.
